With additional brackets, simply set it at any height and leave it there, holding shelter exactly where the building needs it. A chain is used because a spring can only take so many turns before it works against itself, so spring blinds pull up to around 3m.

It mainly comes down to personal preference. A spring blind is generally used if you want the blind either open or closed. A chain blind is better if you want to set it at different heights, with the aid of additional brackets, and it must be used when the blind is over 3m tall, as a spring can only pull up to around 3m.
